זַכְרוּתf. (denom. of זָכָר) 1) male genitals; male sex. Y.Snh.X, 28d bot.; Num. R. s. 20, end.Ab. Zar.44a (expl. מפלצת, 2 Chr. 15:16) כמין ז׳ a phallus. Men.6a תמות וז׳ בבהמה unblemished condition and male sex of sacrifices are required only of cattle. R. to I, 3 (read:) כמדם שמטביל זַכְרוּתוֹ של מכחול בים as much as one takes up when dipping the point of the painting staff into the paint bottle. 3) the fructifying principle, germ, bud, eye or strophiole (in plants); germinating spot (in eggs), v. next w.Y.Sabb.VII, 9d bot.; XII, 13c bot. בדי ליטע זַכְרוּתָהּ של חיטה deep enough to plant the wheat grain up to its eye (so that it can take root). Y.Ter.X, end, 47c ז׳ של חלמון that part of the yolk where germination sets in; ib. ז׳ של מוח the germinating point in the white of the egg (the more substantial and cohesive part). 4) the bony inside of an animals horn or hoofs, the bony projection over which the horny substance grows.
